Print Vs. Press :: essays research papers
Print vs. Press à à à à à In todayââ¬â¢s elections the Media is one of the biggest influences in most elections. Throughout the years the Media has changed quiet a bit. As in most cases, todayââ¬â¢s technology has revolutionized the Media and the way we get our information. Not only do we hear about elections through the media, we learn of updated news pertaining to our everyday lives. There are two types of Media that presents different stimuli, which vary substantially from nature to content. The two types are the Printing press and the Electronic press. Both play major roles in educating and informing our nation. à à à à à The Print media is best known for itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"excel in conveying factual details (graber189).â⬠Graber goes on to add that the print media is generally credited with conveying more knowledge that audiovisual media does. One Critic by the name of Neil Postman says that if our nation is exposed to too much television, we might turn into a nation of dilettantes who avoid the serious issues of the world. I think that we are seeing some of that now. Look at Clinton for example, our media has not been as involved in how well our country has been doing. Rather the media is steady telling the nation who he sleeps with and what he has for breakfast. On the contrary, the newspapers and so on are giving us facts. They are telling us more about the health care reform, and about issues over seas. We as a nation need to care more about our country and set aside some of our amusement. One on the major down falls of the printing press is that, most times the news we r ead is that of old news. If there is an attack in Russia on Wednesday, then it will not be until Thursday or Friday until we read it in the paper. Another example is that of Time magazine. Subscribers of Time usually receive their magazine a week or two later that the latest news. I think that the printing press is for the more informative group and should not be left in the dark. à à à à à The Electronic Media is however convenient and has the ability of reaching millions of people within a matter of minutes. Think about someone hiking in the woods. If there is a global matter and the president needs to address the nation the hiker could hear about this through a cellular phone.

Applications of amortization
amortization Definitions (2) 1. The gradual elimination of a liability, such as a mortgage, in regular payments over a specified period of time. Such payments must be sufficient to cover both principal and interest. 2. Writing off an intangible asset investment over the projected life of the assets. Read more: http://www. investorwords. com/200/amortization. html#ixzz2GXWACfP2 Applications of amortization In business, amortization refers to spreading payments over multiple periods. The term is used for two separate processes: amortization of loans and amortization of intangible assets. Amortization of loansIn lending, amortization is the distribution of payment into multiple cash flow installments, as determined by an amortization schedule. Unlike other repayment models, each repayment installment consists of both principal and interest. Amortization is chiefly used in loan repayments (a common example being a mortgage loan) and in sinking funds. Payments are divided into equal amoun ts for the duration of the loan, making it the simplest repayment model. A greater amount of the payment is applied to interest at the beginning of the amortization schedule, while more money is applied to principal at the end.Commonly it is known as EMI or Equated Monthly Installment. [1] or, equivalently, where: P is the principal amount borrowed, A is the periodic payment, r is the periodic interest rate divided by 100 (annual interest rate also divided by 12 in case of monthly installments), and n is the total number of payments (for a 30-year loan with monthly payments n = 30 ? 12 = 360). Negative amortization (also called deferred interest) occurs if the payments made do not cover the interest due. The remaining interest owed is added to the outstanding loan balance, making it larger than the original loan amount. If the repayment model for a loan is ââ¬Å"fully amortized,â⬠then the very last payment (which, if the schedule was calculated correctly, should be equal to al l others) pays off all remaining principal and interest on the loan. If the repayment model on a loan is not fully amortized, then the last payment due may be a large balloon payment of all remaining principal and interest. If the borrower lacks the funds or assets to immediately make that payment, or adequate credit to refinance the balance into a new loan, the borrower may end up in default. Amortization of intangible assetsIn accounting, amortization refers to expensing the acquisition cost minus the residual value of intangible assets (often intellectual property such as patents and trademarks or copyrights) in a systematic manner over their estimated useful economic lives so as to reflect their consumption, expiry, obsolescence or other decline in value as a result of use or the passage of time. A corresponding concept for tangible assets is depreciation. Methodologies for allocating amortization to each accounting period are generally the same as for depreciation. However, many intangible assets such as goodwill or certain brands may be deemed to have an indefinite useful life and are therefore not subject to amortization (although goodwill is subjected to an impairment test every year). Amortization is recorded in the financial statements of an entity as a reduction in the carrying value of the intangible asset in the balance sheet and as an expense in the income statement. Under International Financial Reporting Standards, guidance on accounting for the amortization of intangible assets is contained in IAS 38. 2] Under United States generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the primary guidance is contained in FAS 142. [3] While theoretically amortization is used to account for the decreasing value of an intangible asset over its useful life, in practice, many companies will ââ¬Å"amortizeâ⬠what would otherwise be one-time expenses by listing them as a capital expense on the cash flow statement and paying off the cost through amortization, thereby improving the company's net income in the fiscal year or quarter of the expense Amortization schedule An amortization schedule is a table detailing each periodic payment on an amortizing loan (typically a mortgage), as generated by an amortization calculator. Amortization refers to the process of paying off a debt (often from a loan or mortgage) over time through regular payments. A portion of each payment is for interest while the remaining amount is applied towards the principal balance. The percentage of interest versus principal in each payment is determined in an amortization schedule. While a portion of every payment is applied towards both the interest and the principal balance of the loan, the exact amount applied to principal each time varies (with the remainder going to interest). An amortization schedule reveals the specific monetary amount put towards interest, as well as the specific amount put towards the principal balance, with each payment. Initially, a large portion of each payment is devoted to interest. As the loan matures, larger portions go towards paying down the principal Methods of amortizationThere are different methods in which to arrive at an amortization schedule. These include: â⬠¢Straight line (linear) â⬠¢Declining balance â⬠¢Annuity â⬠¢Bullet (all at once) â⬠¢Balloon (amortization payments and large end payment) â⬠¢Increasing balance (negative amortization) Amortization schedules run in chronological order. The first payment is assumed to take place one full payment period after the loan was taken out, not on the first day (the amortization date) of the loan. The last payment completely pays off the remainder of the loan.Often, the last payment will be a slightly different amount than all earlier payments. In addition to breaking down each payment into interest and principal portions, an amortization schedule also reveals interest-paid-to-date, principal-paid-to-date, and the remaining principal ba lance on each payment date. Example amortization schedule This amortization schedule is based on the following assumptions: First, it should be known that rounding errors occur and depending how the lender ccumulates these errors, the blended payment (principal + interest) may vary slightly some months to keep these errors from accumulating; or, the accumulated errors are adjusted for at the end of each year, or at the final loan payment. There are a few crucial points worth noting when mortgaging a home with an amortized loan. First, there is substantial disparate allocation of the monthly payments toward the interest, especially during the first 18 years of the mortgage. In the example above, payment 1 allocates about 80-90% of the total payment towards interest and only $67. 9 (or 10-20%) toward the Principal balance. The exact percentage allocated towards payment of the principal depends on the interest rate. Not until payment 257 or 21 years into the loan does the payment alloc ation towards principal and interest even out and subsequently tip the majority of the monthly payment toward Principal balance pay down. Second, understanding the above statement, the repetitive refinancing of an amortized mortgage loan, even with decreasing interest rates and decreasing Principal balance, can cause the borrower to pay over 500% of the value of the original loan amount. Re-amortization' or restarting the amortization schedule via a refinance causes the entire schedule to restart: the new loan will be 30 years from the refinance date, and initial payments on this loan will again be largely interest, not principal. If the rate is the same, say 8%, then the interest/principal allocation will be the same as at the start of the original loan (say, 90/10). This economically unfavorable situation is often mitigated by the apparent decrease in monthly payment and interest rate of a refinance, when in fact the borrower is increasing the total cost of the property. This fact is often (understandably) overlooked by borrowers. Third, the payment on an amortized mortgage loan remains the same for the entire loan term, regardless of Principal balance owed but only for a fixed rate, fully amortizing loan. For example, the payment on the above scenario will remain $733. 76 regardless if the Principal balance is $100,000 or $50,000. Paying down large chunks of the Principal balance in no way affects the monthly payment, it simply reduces the term of the loan and reduces the amount of interest that can be charged by the lender resulting in a quicker payoff. To avoid these caveats of an amortizing mortgage loan many borrowers are choosing an interest-only loan to satisfy their mortgage financing needs. Interest-only loans have their caveats as well which must be understood before choosing the mortgage payment term that is right for the individual borrower. 3 Amortization calculator An amortization calculator is used to determine the periodic payment amount due on a loan (typically a mortgage), based on the amortization process. The amortization repayment model factors varying amounts of both interest and principal into every installment, though the total amount of each payment is the same.An amortization schedule calculator is often used to adjust the loan amount until the monthly payments will fit comfortably into budget, and can vary the interest rate to see the difference a better rate might make in the kind of home or car one can afford. An amortization calculator can also reveal the exact dollar amount that goes towards interest and the exact dollar amount that goes towards principal out of each individual payment. The amortization schedule is a table delineating these figures across the duration of the loan in chronological order. The formula The calculation used to arrive at the periodic payment amount assumes that the first payment is not due on the first day of the loan, but rather one full payment period into the loan. While normal ly used to solve for A, (the payment, given the terms) it can be used to solve for any single variable in the equation provided that all other variables are known. One can rearrange the formula to solve for any one term, except for i, for which one can use a root-finding algorithm. The annuity formula is: Where: â⬠¢A = periodic payment amount P = amount of principal, net of initial payments, meaning ââ¬Å"subtract any down-paymentsâ⬠â⬠¢i = periodic interest rate â⬠¢n = total number of payments This formula is valid if i > 0. If i = 0 then simply A = P / n. For a 30-year loan with monthly payments, Note that the interest rate is commonly referred to as an annual percentage rate (e. g. 8% APR), but in the above formula, since the payments are monthly, the rate must be in terms of a monthly percent. Converting an annual interest rate (that is to say, annual percentage yield or APY) to the onthly rate is not as simple as dividing by 12, see the formula and discussion in APR. However if the rate is stated in terms of ââ¬Å"APRâ⬠and not ââ¬Å"annual interest rateâ⬠, then dividing by 12 is an appropriate means of determining the monthly interest rate. Derivation of the formula The formula for the periodic payment amount is derived as follows. For an amortization schedule, we can define a function that represents the principal amount remaining at time . We can then derive a formula for this function given an unknown payment amount and .We can generalize this to Applying the substitution (see geometric progressions) We end up with For payment periods, we expect the principal amount will be completely paid off at the last payment period, or Solving for A, we get or After substitution and simplification we get 4 Negative amortization In finance, negative amortization, also known as NegAm, deferred interest or graduated payment mortgage, occurs whenever the loan payment for any period is less than the interest charged over that period so th at the outstanding balance of the loan increases. As an amortization method the shorted amount (difference between interest and repayment) is then added to the total amount owed to the lender. [1] Such a practice would have to be agreed upon before shorting the payment so as to avoid default on payment. This method is generally used in an introductory period before loan payments exceed interest and the loan becomes self-amortizing. The term is most often used for mortgage loans; corporate loans which have negative amortization are called PIK loans. Amortization refers to the process of paying off a debt (often from a loan or mortgage) over time through regular payments.A portion of each payment is for interest while the remaining amount is applied towards the principal balance. The percentage of interest versus principal in each payment is determined in an amortization schedule. 5. Amortizing loan In banking and finance, an amortizing loan is a loan where the principal of the loan is paid down over the life of the loan (that is, amortized) according to some amortization schedule, typically through equal payments. Similarly, an amortizing bond is a bond that repays part of the principal (face value) along with the coupon payments.Compare with a sinking fund, which amortizes the total debt outstanding by repurchasing some bonds. Each payment to the lender will consist of a portion of interest and a portion of principal. Mortgage loans are typically amortizing loans. The calculations for an amortizing loan are those of an annuity using the time value of money formulas, and can be done using an amortization calculator. An amortizing loan should be contrasted with a bullet loan, where a large portion of the loan will be paid at the final maturity date instead of being paid down gradually over the loan's life.An accumulated amortization loan represents the amount of amortization expense that has been claimed since the acquisition of the asset. Effects Amortization of debt has two major effects: Credit risk First and most importantly, it substantially reduces the credit risk of the loan or bond. In a bullet loan (or bullet bond), the bulk of the credit risk is in the repayment of the principal at maturity, at which point the debt must either be paid off in full or rolled over. By paying off the principal over time, this risk is mitigated. Interest rate riskA secondary effect is that amortization reduces the duration of the debt, reducing the debt's sensitivity to interest rate risk, as compared to debt with the same maturity and coupon rate. This is because there are smaller payments in the future, so the weighted-average maturity of the cash flows is lower. Weighted-average life Main article: Weighted-average life The number weighted average of the times of the principal repayments of an amortizing loan is referred to as the weighted-average life (WAL), also called ââ¬Å"average lifeâ⬠. It's the average time until a dollar of principal is repaid. In a formula, where: â⬠¢ is the principal, is the principal repayment in coupon , hence â⬠¢ is the fraction of the principal repaid in coupon , and â⬠¢ is the time from the start to coupon â⬠¢ 6. Amortization (tax law) In tax law, amortization refers to the cost recovery system for intangible property. Although the theory behind cost recovery deductions of amortization is to deduct from basis in a systematic manner over an asset's estimated useful economic life so as to reflect its consumption, expiration, obsolescence or other decline in value as a result of use or the passage of time, many times a perfect match of income and deductions does not occur for policy reasons.Depreciation A corresponding concept for tangible assets is depreciation. Methodologies for allocating amortization to each tax period are generally the same as for depreciation. However, many intangible assets such as goodwill or certain brands may be deemed to have an indefinite useful lif e, or ââ¬Å"self-createdâ⬠and are therefore not subject to amortization

Steven Spielbergââ¬â¢s Interpretation of Philip K. Dicksââ¬â¢s...
Steven Spielbergââ¬â¢s Interpretation of Philip K. Dicksââ¬â¢s Minority Report In the year 2054 crime has become a thing of the past. The relatively new Pre-Crime system allows the government to operate an elite police force, which with the help of three very talented and unique human beings can see into the future and prevent countless crimes, especially murders before they happen. In Philip K. Dicksââ¬â¢s short story, The Minority Report, the world we live in is nearly infallible. With the reduction of violent criminal acts, people can live their lives in peace and prosperity without the fear of the pain and suffering, which usually accompanies violence. Likewise, in director Steven Spielbergââ¬â¢s 2002 movie re-creation of Dickââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In both instances, as the story approaches an end point, Anderton realizes that his original vision of the predicament facing him was faulty. The shock and amazement that the individuals who Anderton though were behind an apparent plot to seize his job by framing him for murder, were in fac t simply doing their jobs by pursuing him, leads the main character to uncover a plan where other previously benign forces were at play manipulating the situation at hand for their own personal gains. In the final moments of both narrations of the story, the somewhat ironic endings for those involved lead to the proclamation of Andertonââ¬â¢s innocence and the punishment of those really attempting to manipulate the Pre-Crime system for their own use. Although both Dickââ¬â¢s and Spielbergââ¬â¢s versions of The Minority Report were alike in many general ways, Spielbergââ¬â¢s later interpretation of Dickââ¬â¢s short story did deviate somewhat for its original context. Whereas Dickââ¬â¢s version of the narrative pitted John Anderton, the director of Pre-Crime against other corrupt elements of the government, Spielbergââ¬â¢s version, had Anderton struggle with internal elements within his own organization which were trying to assure a safe future for the Pre-Crime system. Furthermore, in Dickââ¬â¢s story Anderton was actually being framed by an Army General, Kaplan, in an effort to prove that Pre-Crime was faulty, which would

From Danteââ¬â¢s Inferno to Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein, being frightened has not only been one of peopleââ¬â¢s favorite pastimes, but a way for us to explain the paranormal and unrevealed. In recent times however, there seems to be a shift from demonic creatures of the night to over sexualized human-like creatures who hide amongst us in the day. In this essay, I will show the gradual humanizing of the vampire and how it has morphed from a demonic creature damned by God into a creature with a big heart that is not much different from us. Characteristics of Leadership for Communication- myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theCharacteristics of Leadership for Communication Skills. Answer: Introduction Leadership is one of the most important qualities that play a key role in management; it is at the center stage of every successful organization. Every leader who wishes to derive success from his or her organization should display leadership characteristics, and in that connection, any successful organization always has a leader with exemplary leadership qualities. Management, therefore, involves a number of leadership qualities, which some of these can be learned while others can just be copied from successful leaders (Phelps, 2012). Some characteristics of leadership, although the list here is not exhaustive, are explained below: Communication skills Communication is a fundamental characteristic of leadership because every leader is expected to speak properly to his or her audience. It is worth to note that communication is something that takes place all the time; therefore, a leader is expected to be somebody who can express his or her ideas clearly and in a manner that the audience will comprehend the content being spoken (Hamel Prahalad, 2005). Communication skill is a leadership characteristic that can be learned through teaching, for instance, many courses including those concerning management, are accompanied by communication skills as support courses. Therefore, people studying management in schools can have an opportunity to study communication skills. Flexibility A leader is expected to be flexible in his or her decisions. He should not be someone who sticks to the status quo all the times without allowing room for changes. In management, leaders are constantly faced with instances when they are required to adopt a new idea, hence forcing them to be flexible (Loudenback, Kelley, 2013). Flexibility enables them to view the changes as those that would help them achieve their goals and objectives. Problem-solving A leader is highly expected to be someone who can solve problems because he or she is constantly faced with many problems in or outside the workplace. Problem-solving is a leadership characteristic that every leader must possess because leaders work with their employees all the times (Jenster, Hover, 2014). Characteristics of leadership in relation to Jack Ma Jack Ma has shown great leadership skills despite the fact that he does not possess high academic qualifications. Therefore, the CEO has a bigger role to play in ensuring that the operations of the business are that conforms with his ideas. The following characteristics can be derived from the leadership of Jack Ma, they include Charismatic and visionary If we study his leadership style, we can conclude that Jack Ma is a charismatic leader because the business he started was based on the internet, however, at the time he was doing that, the internet was an illusion in China, and nobody thought he could link business with internet to come up with e-business (Hopkins, 2013). He is visionary in the sense that he could invent this business and struggle to see it successful. Due to the changing business ideas, competition, and employee demands, it may not be easy to invent a business, which is internet-based, and constantly improve it to be one of the best of its own kind. Being focus Jack Ma is a leader who is focused on ensuring that his business is prospering despite challenges, and having little knowledge in internet technology, he still managed to be one the most aspiring innovator. Determination In order to achieve results, entrepreneurship requires a determined and consistent approach. In Jack Mas leadership, we see a determined person throughout despite difficulties and challenges. It is through this that his business has shown exemplary achievements. Evidence that people and social community agree with his leadership in the business sector Many people feel that Jack Ma leadership is one of the best. This is evident from the references made in journals, magazines, and the social media platform. Majority of the people think that Alibaba.com is a successful business, and indeed, they have proven to be the most searched on the internet (Dobni, Dobni, Luffman, (2008). Jack Ma has received several invitations to many universities to give a lecture on management. When he began the business, people thought he might not succeed since his education was not in line with the kind of business he is involved. Jack Ma struggled with education, and at times, he could not successfully pass his examinations to enable him to pursue higher learning. The story tells us that he later tried to get admission to best universities like Harvard, but he was unsuccessful. Despite several challenges that come with global business, and especially, online businesses, Jack Ma still managed to be one of the most admirable businesspeople in the world. Luxury hotel free essay sample
Luxury hotels are always attracted by the rich and upper classes. These luxury hotels can distinguish the rich and the poor in a high level, and it is difficult to change these hotels to glocalization. One of the dilemmas facing the Alegre Hotel in Palma Cay is whether to glocalize and gradually become a unified campaign. This dilemma is the focus of Macro Bertini and John T. Gourvilleââ¬â¢s case study, ââ¬ËTime for A Unified Campaignââ¬â¢ (2011). ââ¬ËTime for A Unified Campaignââ¬â¢ concerns a luxury hotel in Palma Cay and the COO of Alegre Hotels, Fernando Ruiz. Alegre Hotels are a hotel chain that have gorgeous hotels around the world. Recently, Alegre hotel is facing a problem that the booking market in Palma Cay is extremely different in high and low season and there is a coming crisis to the traditional promotion. Beatriz Soto, the manager of Alegre hotel, wants to use $700,000 to change the present booking problem by cutting the price for the travel agencies and online portal. On the other hand, Ana Montoya, the chief marketing officer of the company, is against Beatrizââ¬â¢s requirement for two reasons. She maintains that the hotel is an urban hotel and it would be undermine the hotel if they change to globalization by reducing the price in Alegre. In addition, she argues that the hotel managers chose their work because it provides unique property. Thus, Alegre hotelââ¬â¢s manager input will lose if they change strategy. Fernando now needs to make a decision to approve Beatriz or Ana. In other words, Fernando should consider the long-term strategy is whether to keep the traditional hotel operation in high-level or provide money to adapt to the local environment situation in Palma Cay. Two experts have given advice about this dilemma, Raul Gonzalez who is the CEO of a hotel, and Kevin Lane Keller who is a professor of marketing. Both of them recognize that Fernando should find ways to develop and help the problem of Alegre properties to use brand advantage to benefit the whole entire portfolio, and find ways to communicate and encourage customers. However, the viewpoint of the two experts is totally different. While Gonzalez asserts that Fernando should use bottom up strategy which is glocalize from individual to unify the campaign in Alegre, Keller claims that Fernando should use top down strategy which is to keep original structure of Alegre and focus on customers and the hotel managers. Gonzalez states that provide a large number of money is not only can solve the present booking problem, but also is investment for Alegre and benefit to the hotel brand. He suggests that Alegre should follow the airline model which is to cutting the price and keep a strong relation with travel agencies and online portals to encourage customers booking earlier. Meanwhile, he also gives a recommendation that the hotel can use video or brochures to promote Palma Cay. In contrast, Keller highlights that Fernandoââ¬â¢s aim is to focus on the customers and managers. He recommends that Fernando ought to develop a campaign that individual hotels can adapt to. In addition, Keller assets that Fernando need to protect the autonomy of the hotel managers because they can focus on those travel agencies to promote the advantage of the Alegre hotel. I concur with the position of Gonzalez that Fernando should invest the money to Alegre to globalize and become a unified campaign. Gonzalez argues that Alegre needed to be invested so that the brand of the hotel would earn benefits. Gonzalez give a recommendation for reducing the inventory pressure and breaking the dependence on intermediaries is that Alegre can use airline model to encourage booking desire of customers and find out the way communicate with customers directly to control the brand. In my opinion, not only customers are important, but also the quality and characteristics of the hotel are critical. Every Alegre hotel should has its own special features so that customers can remember and become target member of the hotel. Fernando should invest money on the key local characteristics on Alegre would make hotel attractive and customers become active. Besides, Fernando could provide some rewards on booking customers to make Alegre hotel more attractive.
